  January 26, 2008 :: Getting Closer...

Last time I mentioned that I needed to lose 50 pounds so that my wife would "allow" me to ride RAGBRAI this year. My new "diet" started on January 19th - exactly 6 months before my 40th birthday, and on my step-son's 14th birthday. Are you curious to see how it's going? Here's a chart for you:

What is Xenical? It's a fat-blocking drug. The over-the-counter brand most people know is "Alli". One nasty side effect - if you eat TOO much fat, you can spontaneously crap yourself. Keep it around 30% and you'll be fine. To keep my diet viable, I'm only taking Xenical once per day at the most. If I start relying on it, I'll eat more junk. This way, my diet continues to be healthy, but I have a backup if the situation dictates that I can't eat really good stuff, or if I want a treat.

Anyway, as you can see, I've lost 12 pounds so far. In a week. "They" say that you should only lose 1-2 pounds per week. "They" forget to mention that when you radically change your diet - from junk to healthy - the pounds are going to fall off for the first week or two. Plus, when you're as overweight as I am, 12 pounds is barely noticable.

My goal is to be at 250lbs by RAGBRAI/my 40th birthday. Once warm weather arrives and I can ride again, I think it will be a very attainable goal. Future plans? I'd like to get down to 200-220. Honestly, I can't imagine being lighter than that. I'm just *Big*. But, we'll see what happens.
